"Het enthousiasme van Max werkt stimulerend! "

Max gaf een serie lessen op de tenorsaxofoon aan mij. Dit om een herstart voor saxofoon voor mij mogelijk te maken na een stop van ruim dertig jaar. Startniveau : Technisch beheerste ik het instrument matig en kon ik noten lezen. Belangrijkste probleem was het aanvoelen en constant volgen van het ritme. De lessen waren deels technisch, oefenen met constante lange toon, ademhalingstechniek en het spelen van verschillende toonladders in verschillende toonsoorten. Het juiste en consequente gebruik van de metronoom was erg belangrijk en werd een goede basis voor mijn zwakke ritmegevoel. Een stappenplan om het juiste ritme te krijgen en vol te houden en eventueel tijdens het spelen te corrigeren gaf me veel houvast. Ondersteuning van de backing track van de stukken en het gebruik van de metronoom  bracht me snel verder. Max was streng in het technisch gedeelte, maar gaf de juiste aanwijzingen om vooruitgang te boeken. Zijn uitgangspunt “ het saxofoon bespelen moet in de eerste plaats plezier geven” brengt hij met verve. Hij stimuleerde door complimenten te geven voor die onderdelen die goed gingen en bleef kritisch op de zwakke (ritme) delen van de stukken. En dat werkte aanstekelijk. Het zette aan tot regelmatig en voldoende oefenen tussen de lessen door vanuit duidelijke opdrachten. De lessen waren didactisch zeer gestructureerd; Iedere les begon met,” hoe is het gegaan en waar heb je moeite mee? Daar gaan we dan in de eerste plaats aan werken”, daarna werd in de les de volgende stap gezet, techniek aangeleerd, toonladders geoefend en de stukken ingestudeerd en het eindigde steeds in het vrolijk samen spelen van het tot dan toe geleerde. Dit motiveerde zeer. Max benadrukte het belang van dagelijks oefenen en gaf tips hoe de techniek en het “vrij spelen” te combineren in oefeningen. Iedere les stond weliswaar in een logische lijn maar werd verpersoonlijkt gebracht naar niveau en vraag van mij. Het heeft mij erg over de drempel gebracht om weer saxofoon te spelen en daar veel plezier aan te beleven en tegelijkertijd serieus de opgegeven oefeningen  tussen de lessen te blijven doen. Ik heb inmiddels een klein repertoire opgebouwd van een tiental eenvoudige nummers, die ik graag blijf oefenen met backing track en metronoom. Het enthousiasme van Max werkt stimulerend en zijn liefde voor de saxofoon heeft mijn belangstelling omgezet in enthousiast dagelijks spelen op mijn tenorsaxofoon. Kees
